Protesting

dad's house
I've just spent 20 minutes outside Zimbabwean Embassy at the invitiation of the excellent Johninnit.

I watched some very brave people demonstrating in support of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions. I'm sure my presence boosted support sufficiently to over-tip the balance, and bring about real change.

But if it didn't, you can read more here-

"The ZCTU has announced National Actions on the 19th and 20th of September in response to a Presidential decree that has frozen all wages for six months despite having signed the Prices and Incomes Stabilization Protocol on 1st June 2007. ZCTU members will hold 2 nationwide stayaways on these days and have withdrawn from the Tripartite Negotiation Forum until the Presidential powers used to issue the order have been clarified."

That page also includes a very simple-to-do email to the Zimbabwean High commissioner in protest to the salary freeze and the workers rights violations by the Zimbabwean government. Hit the "Click Here To Act Now" button.

EDIT: Photos-

Plus a report (with better photos) by John - "Lets All Go Down The Strand"

Tatchell is back on form with this piece over on CIF about Bobby M: http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/peter_tatchell/2007/09/nice_try_but.html

Guess how long it takes for Bush to crop up in the comments. Go on, guess.

As Tatchell says, it's a stupid idea for Brown to unilaterally boycott the summit. Mugabe's line (which seems to be shared at least partially by a lot of African leaders) is that all Zimbabwe's current problems are not due to years of dictatorial misrule culminating in an insane economic policy, but are due to meddling by the former colonial power. It would really take a bit of EU solidarity to make a difference.
