Me Drop
1. On your recommendations I purchased "Red Mars" from the local chazbo shop (99p) to read when I've finished HP Lovecraft, which I'm quite enjoying as it happens. Also bought "Andy Warhol's Children's Book" (29p)

2. I meant to do a longer post about this, but anybody of my generation may have a passing interest in a series of five plays - One Chord Wonders on Radio 4. This is the premise-
"Five plays about the punk generation 30 years on. Someone is anonymously organising a reunion of the 27 people who went to a gig by punk legends The Adverts in Camberley in 1977."

The first two have been pretty enjoyable and clever, which is not really surprising considering the writer is Frank Cottrell Boyce, who wrote several screenplays including "24 Hour Party People". The second one is still on "Listen Again", and the third one goes out on Friday night.

3. I rather enjoyed the David Miliband article that seems to be causing a lot of silly season froth in the papers. I pretty much agree with every word, except perhaps " I still believe we can win the next election"

4. [info]rainbarrow alerts me to this article in the Lewisham Mercury about The John Evelyn pub. It featured in the documentary series "the Tower" which has just won a Bafta. It's also a regular stop for both Blackheath Morris and Fowlers Molly Dancers tours, due to the ever friendly audiences there. Congratulations to landlord Doug Elsley who seems to have had an improvement in his circumstances since the programme was made. I never actually saw the series, but I'd love to see it, if anybody can help...

5. Something has bitten my ankle leaving two very large sore red circles behind. A vampire bat, possibly?

6. "Bits" was a rather fantastic track by Prag VEC from their first EP.

All I know about Prag VEC is that the bass player from World Domination Enterprises was a member at some point. Any recommendations of where to start?

Jeez - everything they did could probably fit onto one side of an LP!

The "Bits" "Existential" "Wolf" "Cigarettes" EP is flawless, as is the "Expert" single.

And that's everything I've got.

And I believe Half Man Half Biscuit had a song called Prag VEC at the Melkweg.

World Domination Enterprises, eh? What a top band they were.

only know "Asbestos Lead Asbestos" but it's a stonking track.

I'd be interested in what you think of HPL. Most lovecraft fans I know are looney occultists who're into, and I quote: "fecked-up evil stuff".

red mars
Hope you like it. If you want to find out more, the author did an interesting interview on the Planetary Radio podcast a few months back. http://www.planetary.org/radio/show/00000233/

He talks about the fact that a fan sent him a piece of meteorite that was tested as having landed from Mars. So he ate it (a little at a time, grated over his food I think).

He also said that a lot of the inspiration for the book came from (right wing proto-fascist) Robert Heinlein's book "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress", which I read afterwards and thoroughly enjoyed.

Which second hand bookshop, just out of interest?!

I can remember listening to One Chord Wonders on John Peel. I quite literally used to listen with my radio under the bed covers - looking back I wonder why I didn't have headphones. I know Ipods hadn't been invented, but headphones certainly had. Were they so ridiculously expensive that all we could afford was those rubbish one ear white plastic things?

I actually think the main problem was that all headphones in those days had big quarter-inch jacks, whilst the earphone sockets on trannies was the tiny one built for exactly those sh1te mono white earplugs...
